About Yarn Calculator
A free yarn estimation tool built by crafters, for crafters — using industry-standard formulas so you never run short on a project again.
Built for Yarn Crafters
YarnCalculator.com exists to answer one question every knitter and crocheter faces: how much yarn do I need? Every formula, every default value, and every feature is calibrated specifically for yarn-based crafts.
Our Mission
We believe buying yarn shouldn't require a math degree or five years of experience. Our calculator handles the gauge adjustments, weight conversions, and crochet multipliers so you can focus on the craft.
Accuracy You Can Trust
Our yardage calculations are grounded in Craft Yarn Council standard gauge data, validated against Ravelry's database of over one million completed projects, and aligned with Crochet Guild of America guidelines.
Education First
Beyond the calculator, our blog covers gauge, yarn weights, fiber selection, and substitution — the knowledge that makes every project go more smoothly.
How Our Calculator Works
The yarn calculator estimates total yardage by multiplying your project area (width × length in square inches) by a yards-per-square-inch factor. That factor is derived from the Craft Yarn Council's standard yarn weight system — the same system that governs how yarn is labeled and sold across North America.
When you enter your actual gauge (stitches and rows per 4 inches), the calculator adjusts the estimate proportionally. A tighter gauge uses more yarn per square inch; a looser gauge uses less. When you select crochet instead of knitting, the calculator applies a 30% multiplier to account for the structural difference between crochet and knit stitches — a figure supported by Crochet Guild of America guidelines.
Default gauge values come from the Craft Yarn Council's published standards. Yardage benchmarks were validated against Ravelry's project database — real finished objects made by real crafters. We update these values when new industry data becomes available.

Our Editorial Process
Every article on this site is written by yarn crafters with hands-on experience in both knitting and crochet. We cross-reference all factual claims against authoritative sources — primarily Craft Yarn Council publications, CYCA standards, and published knitting/crochet reference books.
We don't publish articles unless they contain practical information you can act on immediately. No filler, no padding — just the details that help you make better project decisions. If we find an error after publishing, we correct it and note the update date.
The calculator formula is reviewed whenever the Craft Yarn Council updates its standard gauge recommendations. Last reviewed: .
